Educational workshops

« Gladiators » workshop (at the Amphitheatre or at the Tour Magne)

Supervised by cultural specialists trained in Antiquity, the children can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of art of the gladiator, attend a real combat in the Arena and try out the equipment.

History of the gladiators: the children are immersed in the first century A.D. through the presentation of the world of the amphitheatre and the lives of gladiators in Nemausus (the old Roman name for the city of Nîmes). They discover how one became a gladiator, what different tools and equipment gladiators used.
Combat: the children watch a reconstruction of a gladiator fight that’s larger than life!
Gladiators’ equipment: the children discover how the gladiators’ equipment was designed to prolonge combat, protecting the fighters and making the fights as exciting as possible. After this presentation, the children are invited to touch and try on the different helmets and other types of equipment: shields, breastplates, chain mail… (Groups of fewer than 50 children).
 

For 7-15 years. Duration: 45 mins. The educational programmes include a visit to the Arena with audio guide, the Square House with a screening of the Heroes of Nîmes 3D film inside (22 minutes every 30 minutes - time slots on reservation) and a visit to the Magne Tower. Total duration of the visit: 3½ hours.

 

 « War of the Gauls » workshop (at the foot of the Tour Magne)

This interactive workshop presents two types of emblematic warriors: the Roman legionnaire under Julius Caesar and the Gaulish warrior.  

The workshop has three parts:
History and introduction: through a detailed presentation of Roman legionnaires, the children discover their equipment, their preparation for combat as well as the military tactics used during an attack. For Gaulish warriors, the children also discover their equipment, but also their way of life and the types of combat developed by these peoples.
Comparison: after an explanation and a comparison of the techniques of the Gaulish and Roman peoples, the children attend a real life combat demonstration. Then, the children are invited to touch and try on the different helmets and other types of equipment: shields, breastplates, chain mail… (Groups of fewer than 50 children).
Legionnaires’ training: the children enter into the skin of a legionnaire and receive real training (Groups of fewer than 50 children). A unique experience that is both entertaining and educational!
